Do you ever think, ‘This isn’t the life I signed up for?’ I certainly did. The day I turned 30, I felt completely lost, which led to a very memorable conversation with myself.

ME: This isn’t what I thought my life would look like at 30.

ME: No, it’s not. Maybe by the time I’m 40, things will be different.

ME: Yeah, maybe. But what if……..what if I just start being ‘her’ now?

ME:  Being who?

ME: Being the woman I thought I would be when I was 30.

ME: Oh! Do I think I can? What is ‘she’ even like?

ME: Well, she is educated. She has a university degree.

ME: Yes, and she’s well-read. She’s informed about current events and culture.

ME: And she looks after herself. She’s a runner. She does yoga. She eats well.

ME: And she cares about her appearance. She’s got a good wardrobe and a nice haircut, even a little make-up.

ME: Wow! It seems like I have a pretty clear idea of my vision for myself.

ME: Yes, I think I do. I’m just going to start being “her” now.

Fast forward a few months, and I was already becoming the woman I envisioned. I was enrolled at Royal Roads University. I trained and completed my first 10K race. I got a subscription to the newspaper and I joined a book club. I also got a great haircut and some fresh highlights to go with some fashionable new outfits that I wore with pride.

While it was a bit wobbly at first, very quickly I began to carry myself differently. My confidence grew as I got to know my new self and love my life. With that confidence I was able to see a vision for my life that I wouldn’t have thought possible just a few months before. That vision involved my career, my relationships, my spiritual life, and my health and wellbeing.

All these years later, I realize what happened to me wasn’t magic. I was simply tapping into my core values—the internal compass guiding my life. For example, my desire to be ‘educated’ and ‘well-read’ was a direct reflection of my value of Excellence. My desire to be a runner and do yoga tapped into my value of Health.

What are your core values? If you aren’t sure, one way to figure them out is to think of one or more people that you admire and write down the qualities you respect in them. Those qualities are likely your own core values which is why they appeal to you so much.

You don’t have to feel lost and without a vision for your life. You can take charge of your destiny and start building that vision today, just like I did. Now is the perfect time.
